We do not own or manage any land directly, so work closely with others to conserve and enhance the Shropshire Hills.
Our small staff team undertake projects, advise, support and help to co-ordinate the work of others, influence policy and raise awareness. Click on the links to find out more about our current and previous projects:
Ancient Woodland Restoration Project - a partnership with Woodland Trust and Forestry Commission to actively restore anciend woodland and Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites (PAWS) in the Shropshire Hills.
Young Rangers - the programme offers young people (aged 12-16) new opportunities for exploration, learning and adventure in the great outdoors. Mostly funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Green Leaders - Conservation, Campaigning & Leadership Project for 17 -21 year olds in the Shropshire Hills. Mostly funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Our Upland Commons - we are one of four upland landscapes involved in this project to reconnect people with commons and improve public benefits. The project is managed by the Foundation for Common Land on behalf of a broad partnership.
Recent past projects:
Brook Vessons Headwater Restoration Project, 2021: Ditch blocking and fracturing of land drains was carried out on 15 hectares of upland pasture adjacent to a nature reserve, restoring a more natural hydrology to this area of catchment headwaters. The work improved habitats by increasing diversity and wetness of previously improved grasslands, enhancing connections between good existing habitats above on the Stiperstones and lower in the Habberley Valley.
Springs of Rivers Teme, Onny, Clun Project, 2019-2021: - Working in partnership with Severn River’s Trust, the project helped farmers in the Teme, Onny & Clun catchments to make their farms future fit.
Unmuddying the Waters, 2019 - 2021: a two year agreement with the Environment Agency to continue to advise landowners along the river and fund capital works to improve the condition of the catchment.
Capacity Building, 2018-2020: this project enabled the AONB Partnership and the charitable AONB Trust to develop their collaborative working. Activities included preparation of Business Plans, training and development for staff and volunteers, and a programme of income-generation activities and project development through new staffing capacity, supported by communications work. The project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of their Resilient Heritage programme.
River Clun Recovery Project, 2015-2019: this project helped us to help landowners make a positive and significant improvement in the Clun Catchment.
